LEXINGTON, Mass. — January 17, 2013 — RainDance Technologies, the Digital Biology™ company, today announced that its Thunderstorm™ System was awarded a 2012 International GOOD DESIGN™ Award by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design. RainDance worked with Massachusetts-based design firm Product Insight on the development of the ThunderStorm™ System.
“We are very proud of the role that the ThunderStorm System is playing in advancing the applications of DNA sequence data used in clinical research and are pleased to add the GOOD DESIGN award to the many accolades it has received,” said Andy Watson, Chief Marketing Officer at RainDance Technologies. “The ThunderStorm System is a feat of engineering masterwork and its design plays a critical role in the reliability and functionality of this high-throughput analytical instrument. The Product Insight team did an amazing job carefully balancing the needs of the clinical research customer, scientific community and engineering teams with the needs of the laboratory end-user – the results speak for themselves.”
Built on RainDance’s proven picodroplet PCR-based technology, the ThunderStorm System enables clinical researchers to determine all genetic variation contained in any targeted region of the genome with greater accuracy and coverage uniformity. Its true walkaway capabilities allow for the automatic processing of up to 96 samples in a single run at costs lower than those of comparable technologies. Translational research laboratories around the world are utilizing the ThunderStorm System to develop genetic screening panels for cancer, cardiomyopathy, epilepsy, hearing loss, and autism, among other diseases.
“In designing the ThunderStorm System, we wanted to create an instrument that was robust enough for the growing demands of genomic information and also captured RainDance’s goal of applying simplicity and speed in answering complex biological questions,” said Jim Varney, Director of Design at Product Insight. “We are honored to share this award with RainDance and appreciate the community’s recognition of our efforts to push the envelope of design in medically focused research.”
The ThunderStorm™ System is also a recipient of a 2012 red dot design award for design excellence and was recognized as one of the Top 10 Innovations by The Scientist magazine.
